Apartment Living: Can You Adopt

Yes, absolutely! However, not all rehomers agree on this. Many applicants face rejection and their hopes of a canine companion are dashed due to not having access to a secure private garden or because of the stairs leading to the flat.

Yes, absolutely!

However,  not all rehoming centres and rescues agree on this.  Many applicants  face rejection, and their hopes of a canine companion dashed, due to not  having access to a secure private garden or because of the stairs  leading to the flat.

While you  will face rejection, don’t give up!  There are numerous Centres out  there that cater to a wide range of accommodations and many more are  updating their rehoming policies to follow this trend!

Greyhounds  are very adaptable dogs and can live very successfully in any  situation!  At the end of the day, if the hound will be forever loved,  walked, and be given regular access out to the toilet, the accommodation  shouldn’t really matter.  It means another hound is happily homed!

The  only thing we would suggest is depending on the size of the flat, you  might want to aim to adopt a smaller hound!  This will (theoretically)  minimise the clumsy bumping into furniture and maximise zoomie potential  in the smaller space!

It would also be advisable to ask the rehoming centre to stair-test your to-be hound before 100% committing to adopting.

While  some hounds take to stairs naturally and others can be taught, but some  will straight up refuse to do them for the rest of their days.  If you  value your spine at all, you do not want to be carrying a 30kg dog up  flights of stairs several times a day for toilet breaks and walks!

There  will always be hounds that must be homed with a garden, for behavioural  or medical issues, there are oodles more that would suit a flat just  fine!

Don’t get disheartened if the first centre you contact says no, your forever hound is waiting elsewhere!
